a couple of questions for a restomod
#1
hey guys, so i have a resto-mod 70 mach 1, its got a 460 scj and a c6 transmission. I'm trying to figure out what kind of oil works best for this setup? the previous owner can't recall what weight / type he used and the oil is currently low :/ (should i just drain it all and replace it?) also, is there any quick way to 'tighten' the steering wheel? theres a lot of play when steering and i feel i lack control of her.
any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,
phil

Do not try and guess / mix oils
Drain and replace it
You need to check the steering components out under the car for loose / worn / damaged parts. There is nothing to " tighten " the steering wheel. Usually that is a worn out part.

Good advice Don!

Have someone move the steering wheel in the range of the play while you are underneath the car. Like Don says look for worn out parts. I would start with examining the rag joint and follow right through the entire steering system from there.

There is also an adjustment screw on the steering box that will take up some play but before you touch that I would check for obvious wear problems first. If you HAVE to make an adjustment to the steering box you HAVE to reference your service manual before making any adjustments.

There are some variables to the type of motor oil to use. Does the motor have tight oil clearances so you need a 10W-30 or was it built with loose oil clearances so a 20w-50 is more appropriate? Does it have roller lifters or flat tappet lifters? Flat tappet lifters require oil with higher Zink Phosphate (ZDDP) ( I think that's what it is) otherwise you are at high risk of flattening a cam lobe. Without knowing, I would look for a racing oil such as Valvoline VR1 Racing oil. It is a conventional oil, not synthetic. A 10w-40 would be a good starting viscosity but that oil is only available in 10w-30 or 20w-50. If your outside temps are warm I would try the 20w-50, otherwise the 10w-30. You will have to gauge that yourself. If you are unsure, I would contact Valvoline's customer service or tech support.

I personally don't like full synthetic motor oils only because they seem to flow so well that very little oil film remains on surfaces after the engine is shut off.

Best Regards,
Mike

Thanks everybody for your input, I did some homework, current filter on the engine is a motorsport, found the fram equivalent and and picked up some valvoline racing oil. last thing is to get her tuned up, fix the steering column so its not so loose and we're set! sorry i haven't posted any pics, ill post them when i can get decent ones.

Sounds good. Next time you shop for oil filters Wix brand filters are about the best built OEM replacement filter on the market. I've seen several brands cut apart and the differences are very obvious. I haven't come across anybody that is aware of the differences not choose Wix.

If your loose steering starts looking like the steering box is the cause. Be certain to get a set of the reproduction Ford service manuals. The adjustment procedures are simple but the adjustment specifications are specific.

I realized I had a couple of typo's in my previous post. First its VR1 not ZR1, and Second it ZDDP not SDDP. Oh well, its not my first or last mistake.

Have Fun!

Best Regards,
Mike

Agree...WIX is good!

Does anyone prime there oil filters with oil before installing?

I always fill new oil filters as much as possible before installing them. Depending on the angle they install, anywhere from full to half full. Even if only half full, its better than empty.

I was under the impression that 20w-50 is the oil the engine was built for and can be used from temporate to sub tropical temperature zones. I use GTX 20w-50 in my older cars all year round here. Filters here are Ryco or OEM.
Steeering box adjustment is easy PROVIDED:
1) Front wheels up and free, axle stands under frame.
2) Adjust in straight ahead position ONLY.
3) Tighten JUST ENOUGH to remove free play - no pre-load.

Welcome Phil,

It looks like you have been taken care of with some great advice from the guys. Wonderful site this.

With the power of a 460 you definitely don't want loose steering. Diagnosis of the problem should be rather straight forward and the result of tight steering will be a much more enjoyable car.

All the best.
