Thanks for the positive feedback. Like anything else, its not without flaws. But it represents many years of doing things over and over until I am satisfied. I continue to tinker with it. But now its more preservation, such as making certain the brake hydraulics are in good order.

I've tossed around repainting the black a satin black, closer to the original. But I know, and like the painter told me, I'd eventually be fighting a chalky finish on it without a clear coat paint system.

Beautiful car. Something to think about reference your hood. My painter used a flattening agent ( I think that is the term that he used ) in the clear that went on over the blackout. That made the black somewhere between flat and gloss. The car is covered up and I'm preparing to leave on a vacation or I would post a pic. Maybe when I get back. Dave R.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I've been lingering here but haven't logged in for some time now. Haven't seen too many projects with issues to sort through here lately. Probably the time of year.

The painter was somewhat of a purist and suggested a single stage acrylic enamel paint because it's closer to the original paint type than today's urethanes. It made sense. I like the fact that it's very glossy yet doesn't have that modern day clear coat gloss look. Most people ask what type of paint it is because today everybody is use to seeing clear coat finishes.

I really haven't researched if a clear with a flattening agent can be sprayed over the gloss black on the hood. My instinct say's no because urethanes are reduced with acetone. I still go back and forth. The gloss looks good, the flat is more correct.

It would be very difficult to say anything bad about your car but then again there are purist out there. I also like the shine on the hood especially with the white paint. Plus, I would assume it is much easier to maintain (i.e. wax) since it is not a flat paint. I heard some discussion previously on the site surrounding how to care for the flat blacked-out hoods.

Funny you mention wax. With non clear coat finishes that was one of arguments the painter had against using a flat or satin finish on the hood. The other being with time the finish becomes chalky.

Until I'm extremely bored it will remain gloss black. Which I don't foresee happening. Right now I am replacing the magnetic pick up inside the distributor. It's an MSD distributor. I hope I just got a distributor with a defective magnetic pick up and the new magnetic pick up will be more reliable. Fortunately the car was in my garage when it quit working. Engine wouldn't start, no spark. I followed MSD's test procedure and thankfully the faulty component, magnetic pick up, is low cost.

Keep us posted if it was the magnetic pick-up causing the no spark issue with the MSD distributor. If it was, and the part is relatively inexpensive, I would purchase another one to keep in the car just in case. I keep a tool bag in my car which contains an extra set of points, condenser, voltage regulator and other miscellaneous parts. I am thinking on adding a fuel pump to it as well.
