Power steering pump rebuild
#1
My power steering pump has seized and I'm trying to figure out if I should buy a rebuilt core from NPD or similar or have my current one rebuilt. One of the shops I spoke with suggested getting mine rebuilt because the factory rebuilt ones are hit and miss for quality. The only problem I've found with that is the two places that were recommended are either wholesale and only work with dealers and the other guy is backed up over a month. So what have you guys done for power steering pump rebuilds/purchases?

(This is for a 1970 Mach 1 w/ 351W, if it makes any difference)

Sounds like if you need one more immediately your only option is the hit or miss route. No doubt but that is why the one guy is backed up over a month.

Personally I have not had to cross that bridge - maybe someone else has and can chime in.

I HAVE AN A1 CARDONE REMAN ON MY 69 WITH A 351W AND NOT HAVE HAD ANY PROBLEMS. I DID HAVE TO FIND AN OLD SCHOOL MECHANIC TO SWAP THE PULLEY FOR ME.

About how many miles do you have on it? I have seen a couple of the local stores sell the Cardone branded ones.

I went through the previous owner's receipts last night and found out the one I have is from Autozone and was purchased in 2008. So it only has about 1000 miles on it. I guess this one is a "miss" Sad

Also, does anyone have an extra pump bracket they'd like to sell. I need the one for the 1970 351W. This is the one, but I'm trying to find one for less than $50:

THE PUMP HAS BEEN ON THE MUSTANG FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. I START IT ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT THE CAR IS GETTING READY TO GO IN FOR PAINT SO NOT ALOT OF MILES ON IT. NO PROBLEMS SO FAR. I PUT ONE ON MY 67 FAIRLANE BACK IN THE DAY WHICH WAS MY DAILY DRIVER ALL THROUGH COLLEGE AND NEVER HAD ONE PROBLEM WITH IT. THE PARTS STORES THAT HAVE A1 PRODUCTS ARE VERY GOOD ABOUT WARRANTY IF YOU DO HAVE A PROBLEM. YOU MIGHT CALL THAT AUTOZONE AND TELL THEM YOU HAVE THE RECEIPT FOR IT AND SEE IF THEY WILL WARRANTY IT FOR YOU. (YOU NEVER KNOW?)
