front end up.door wont close
#1
oh man i am concerned.front end of car is jacked up,jack stands under each rocker.i open the passenger door, it wont shut.i lower the car it shuts.aarg.
Is this normal? seems my ignition linkage is also bent i could not turn the car off so i go to pull battery cables and the car stills runs!! i thought of Christine.the coil wire killed it.so as i rearrange the shop to make room in the far corner because driving this car soon is fading due to many little issues. Also, is jacking the car up from the crossmember acceptable ??
73 mach 351CJ. but i wont get rid of it.seriously considering really tearing this car down.thanks ya,ll

Some good subframe connectors would really help get rid of the body flex when you jack the car up.

I would just use a torque wrench and keep them at 25lbs. Keep in mind Mustangs back in these days were never meant to last nearly 40 years. so if you drive yours and want to keep it healthy there are some things that just need to be upgraded, like subframe connectors. You wont believe the difference once you add them. Also MONTE CARLO BAR & EXPORT BRACE. The Montecarlo bar makes a big difference in the 71-73. It tightens up the front end to keep it from wondering around, get them both because they really work in tandem.

The skys the limit really just depends how much money you can spend improving 40 year old technology.

The question it raises to me is rust issues? If it is solid. It shouldn't cause the door not to close, when jacked up. Maybe in a convertible but definetly not in a coupe or fastback. While the frame connectors will definetly help, they maybe a bandaid over a more serious problem. I've seen many people put rocker skins over the old rusty ones and not make any repairs to the structure behind them. Which looks good on the outside. But in a unibody car the rocker panel area is the cars main strength. I'd suggest some serious inspection on a lift. At a muffler shop? friend at a sevice center?, before I went to far. This way you'll know what you got. JTS 71 Mach1

My 72 didn't like to be jacked up on one side.
There wasn't a lot of flex in mine but enough to throw the latch off when closing, mine also had an issue with sagging doors until I replaced the hinges.

I agree that convertible doors are not supposed to be opened when the car is jacked up, should be ok on the coupes or sportsroof. Hopefully its nothing major, just hinges or slight missalignment of the doors.

the car is fairly solid.i thought floor pans were critical for strength but they are only sheet metal.and the torque boxes seem ok.the door never gave me trouble, shuts nice and i don't recall much sag.i like all the stiffening up ideas.doing 120 mph was all i could stand.the front of the car was drifting in the wind.i am moving my mill and lathe over in the shop.its time to get her in the corner and sift thru it.thanks everyone i will take all advice and run with it

big + 1 on this, something is wrong, factory jacking points are on the rocker flange
