1965 Fairlane (Mustangmike) - 1969_Mach1 - 11-21-2018
Mustangmike, here's a short video of a 1965 Fairlane 500. It's a nice clean original car. But, I didn't know Fairlanes ever looked like this. This guy has a lot of videos of classic cars, most in original form.

I vaguely remember this body, but I thought the 65 Fairlane 500's, all looked like a Thunderbolt? Which when I looked under Images on google. It showed both this Square Body Fairlane, as a 65. As well as the Thunderbolt Style body, as a 65???? Maybe they had both? Is it possible they split mid year, or something??? Definitely makes you curious as to what the difference is? Will the real 65 Fairlane, Please Pull Forward!

Thanks for sharing the video. Personally, the 64 and 65 Fairlane's never really appealed to me, except for the Thunderbolt. I don't know much about pre-66 Fairlanes but to me 64/65 body style kills the car. But, guys do like and restore them, even the 4 door sedans.

Hey Mike, I sure liked the Video of the Thunderbolt. Man that sucker went! 9.23 in a quarter! WOW! I really liked how smooth, and easy he carried the front end, it came up, stayed there, then as the power peaked, and ran out, it gently came back down. You can sure tell that wasn't his first time in the car! I've driven a couple low 12, high 11 second cars, and rode a couple low 10 second bikes, and I can tell you 9.23 is absolutely NUTS!!! In a good way that is.

In 1964 Ford built 100 Thunderbolt Fairlanes for drag racing. It came with a 427 SOHC engine. They had the fiberglass front ends, plexiglass side windows with no regulators, econoline bucket seats that were lighter, and other "hidden" weight savers, along with ram air through the high beam head lamps. Phil Bonner and Gas Ronda were two of the more famous names to campaign these factory built race cars. I would love to hear one of these originals still in existence wide open
Not sure what the designers were doing but if you look 62-63 Fairlanes share body panels, 64-65 totally different from the rest and each other and 66-67 back to being similar.

Here is another video that talks about the history of the T-bolt. This guy has several videos on different muscle cars and does a nice job telling the history of the car. I think he even mentions the T-bolt in the other video I posted that ran 9.23.

The Thunderbolt was a lot faster car than I expected for 1964. And on a fairly small rear tire. Amazing!
I thought the 1965 Fairlane 500 in the video I posted looked kind of strange as well. I was wondering if anybody here was familiar with them.

I see a few around the car shows here in CT but don't know much about them. However, the first time I saw the 66 Fairlane I ended up owning one about 3 months later. Completely different car only one year apart from the 65. Interestingly enough the 65 and 66 Fairlane share the same 289 fender badge. That's about all for commonality.
Here is a picture of 65 Fairlane gasser. Pretty cool...almost, looks like it would have 4WD!

That one almost looks like they did something like put the Fairlane body on top of a truck chassis.
The gasser era didn't last very long. Did they eventually realize all the car was not very stable with all that air getting underneath it?

I actually went through a brief period where I wanted a gasser. What was heck was I thinking about! My wife pulled my head out of the clouds and since then I lost my desire for them. Definitely looks unstable! I was more into the AWB cars. Lot's of work to do but that is what a true gasser should be.
This one is crazy. How do you even see the road in front you? That year Comet is pretty desirable. I love the roof line but it is another car that's hard to find parts for.
