1969 Mach 1 GT? - Dave R. - 10-11-2016

While at a cruise in this past Saturday a fellow stopped and complimented me on my car. As we talked for a few minutes he told me that he also had a '69 Mach 1. But his is a "Mach 1 GT". I told him I was unfamiliar with that. He was quite proud to tell me that they only made 100 of them. He wasn't in the cruise in parking lot but drove by me when he was leaving. I looked quickly at his car. It could be a GT by the wheels, gas filler, low back buckets, not the deluxe interior. It did have the Mach 1 emblem on the pass. dash with a clock. He was in a hurry to leave so I didn't get a look at the door tag. I don't know what that car started life as but he is thrilled with his Mach 1 GT. As long as he is happy that is all that matters I guess. That said the car is in great shape. Dave R.

HHHMMM I don't believe I've ever heard of that either. Could be kinda like the SS/RS Camaros, somebody marked both boxes on the order form, and it slipped through before someone caught it??????? JTS 71 Mach1

I've never heard of a Mach 1 GT either. Nor have I seen anything like that in any of my reference books. He might be confused because they share some of the same trim and features.

Sounds to me like some body put a Mach 1 emblem on the dash of a GT.

Yep what he said. That sounds like the most likely scenario, somebody adding or swapping parts to create something that truly doesn't exist, Be careful how you break it to him. It could be like an older kid telling a little one, there is no Santa Claus! LOL.

Yeah. I smelled something fishy right away but refrained from doubting him as he was quite proud of his 1 of 100. Had the GT filler lid and I suspect that someone did swap some Mach stuff onto a GT. I only had a minute to look it over. He claimed a 351 4v. motor but again, I didn't get a good look. I wish that I had looked at the data plate. I'll probably never see him again but if I do I'll give the car a once over. Dave R.

He needs to get a Marti Report to be certain what it is. It's either a GT, Mach 1, or a Sportsroof with some GT and Mach 1 trim installed on it. I'd say look at the body code on the door tag but those can be custom made so they might not always be 100% correct. If he's looking for rare, he should hope it's a GT. The GT was not as popular as the Mach 1 so fewer were made.
