ECOBOOST FOR 2015 MUSTANG? - Mach 1 Club - 10-23-2011

With new rumors popping up every day, exactly what the 2015 Mustang will and won't have still remains a mystery. There's talk of it being substantially smaller, of being engineered as a global car with both left and right hand drive, of being a radical departure from the current model in terms of styling and of course, there's the choice of engines.

Given current pressures to meet increasingly stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, it's likely that at least one of the sixth generation pony car's engines will rely on forced induction and direct injection.

Car & Driver magazine believes that a new generation version of EcoBoost V6 will make the cut, along with a base V6 of between 2.5 and 3.0-liters. The latter, if it does materialize will likely come standard in the base Mustang, the blown version, possibly the GT or maybe even a re-born SVO.

There's been talk that the idea of a new age turbocharged wonder, the spiritual successor to the short-lived 1984-86 SVO has been floated in the corridors of power at Dearborn for some time.

Given the current state of the economy and fluctuating fuel prices, an environment not that different from when the original SVO was being conceived, it almost begs the question of not if, but when such a Mustang model does indeed materialize.

If the rumors turn out be true, then let's hope that this time around, Ford at least, is able market the thing properly and hit the car's intended production targets.

What is Ecoboost?

I test drove a 2011 Ford F150 with the Ecoboost technology when hunting for my new truck. It was ok, definitely had low end grunt but after about 45-50 mph it still felt like a V6. I also didn't like how if you nailed the accelerator and had to back off just for a second, the turbos were in re-spooling process and virtually left you with NO - ZERO - NADA power, that was actually a little scary. I inevitably went with the 5.0 in my new 2011 F150. If you do a butt load of heavy trailer hauling then I would definitely look into the Ecoboost, if not it just doesn't make sense since there is virtually no difference in gas mileage from the Ecoboost V6 and the 5.0 V8.

Below is the Torture Test Ford put the Ecoboost motor through, impressive videos, but like Ford says DRIVE ONE! Its definitely very cool, just not for everyone.
