MotorTrend shares more 2015 Mustang rumors - Mach 1 Club - 08-24-2011

MotorTrend released their 2015 Ford Mustang First Look, which seems to confirm many of the rumors that we’ve been hearing about where the new Pony Car will be going. Here’s some notes/confirmations from MotorTrend:

Independent Rear Suspension: The Live Rear Axle is finally being scrapped in favor of an ultra-modern Independent Rear Suspension. According to Motor Trend, the new suspension will be a highly modified version of the Control Blade suspension that Ford developed for use in many of their other products, which will be used to keep some costs down on the new Mustang.
Engine Carryover: Since the 3.7 liter V6 and 5.0 liter V8 are both fairly new, it’s expected that they’ll be staying put for the time being. MotorTrend is “hearing whispers” of direct injection for the 5.0 V8, and a likely revival of the SVO model, this time with one of Ford’s new EcoBoost four cylinders, likely anywhere from 2.3 to 2.5 liters in displacement. The current 2.0 liter four cylinder used in other models makes 247 horsepower, so any larger displacement EcoBoost should be more than adequate. While they’ve heard rumors of a twin turbo V6 EcoBoost, MotorTrend is saying that engine is unlikely, at least for the 2015 launch.
Less Retro Design: MotorTrend is reporting that many of the retro cues that have dominated the Mustang’s design since 2005 will be tossed for 2015, though numerous classic cues will be incorporated in the new design. Specifically, the new Pony will have a long hood and short deck with crisp, creased upper and lower quarter panels. The header above is a MotorTrend artist’s representation of the design. We think it looks a little too similar to the current design and that the new Mustang will look a bit more dramatically different than the current design, but we’ll see! Surely there will be spy shots prior to 2015 that will provide some further clarity to the design.
World Car: MotorTrend also notes that the Mustang is finally going overseas and, like many of Ford’s other products, is going to be a world car.
2014/2015 Shelby GT500: The 2014 GT500 is expected to get a sizable update in order to beat the new Camaro ZL1. It’s expected that the engine will get a new supercharger and increased displacement to anywhere from 5.4 to 5.8 liters, which will increase horsepower to potentially more than 600. After that, though, it’s likely the GT500 will go on hiatus for a year or two while Shelby retools for the new design. Don’t expect a new GT500 before 2016.

Finally, you must be wondering when we’ll know FOR SURE what the new Mustang will look like and contain. Well, MotorTrend has a prediction there, too. They’re thinking that we’ll see the 2015 Mustang for the first time on April 17, 2014. Their logic makes sense, as that day corresponds with both the exact 50th anniversary of the Mustang, and the second day of press conferences at the New York Auto Show.

We’ll see. What do you think?
