Transmission speedometer gear - bob.harlan - 04-07-2011

Looking fo advice. Have a 3-speed manual transmission in 1969 Mach 1. Need to pull extension housing to replace speedometer drive gear. Any body have tips or guide lines for the job? Thanks for any help.

Pretty straight forward support trans ahead of the mount the main body part. remove the tailhousing and change the gear these are usually plastic gears.remove the snap ring slide the gear off and install the new one.Might have to tap the old one off.But be careful not to let the shaft slide back towards the rear you could jar things loose inside and have to remove the trans and straighten that out.you should be ok though.Dont loose the ball in the shaft under the gear. The reason you dont want the shaft to slide back are the syncros could jam our the needle bearings in the input could fall out.Hope this helps.

Jim from Iowa.

Thanks Jim, I was thinking that's all there was to it. I think the snap ring came off and let the gear slide back on the shaft or the gear has disintegrated. I can feel the shaft and snap ring groove but no gear. My wife is tired of clocking the mile markers to check our speed.

I understand Bob.There should be a ball that locks the gear to the shaft also.

I got the housing off today. Gear is gone, maybe the pieces are in the main gear housing. This has the newer style spring clip (found that in the extension housing) to hold the gear in place.
